Veteran’s Day
November 11th is known throughout America as Veteran’s Day, a day when those who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States are honored for their service. The holiday was originally named Armistice Day when WWI ended at 11:11AM on November 11, 1911, and after WWII, it was renamed Veteran’s Day to recognize those who served in that great conflict as well. This year we also recognize those who served in Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Haiti, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other countries and conflicts across the world’s surface. These men and women were imprisoned, wounded, tortured, killed, giving of themselves to keep the fire of freedom burning bright; each of them served our Country in uniform, willing to give their lives to protect our Nation, our Constitution and our citizenry.
The long lasting spiritual war in which we are engaged has veterans who came through battles from Eden down through the centuries until today. Hebrews 11 gives us a list of heroes of faith, and to that list we add the Missionary Apostles, such as Paul and Thomas, leaders like Barnabas and John. Other men such as Whitfield, Tyndale, Luther, and more recently, the five martyrs in Ecuador, the murdered hostages in Columbia, the 7 people imprisoned in Afghanistan, Pastor Saeed in Iran, those who are imprisoned and tortured and beheaded in repressive regimes across the world. The preachers of God’s Word like John Wesley, Billy Sunday, Billy Graham, and the countless men and women who serve across our Nation in churches large and small. Some serve congregations who are unable to pay their Pastor’s a sustainable wage. These men work their paying jobs all week, still find time to, visit, study, preach and teach. Each of them, along with every other believer in Salvation through Jesus is a true veteran of God’s mighty army. No single individual is successful in his own strength however, “No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.” Ps 33:16. Our strength is in our Lord, our success is in our reliance upon Him, our victory is hidden in His, and our reward is to hear His “Well done, faithful servant” as we enter Heaven’s portals.
We, as a nation, owe our precious freedom to the men and women who gave of themselves in the Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. We owe our rich spiritual heritage to the great men who have gone before us. May God bless each of you abundantly this day for your willing service to our living Savior, and thank you with God’s great blessings.
Our gracious Heavenly father I ask You to protect and keep every man or woman in uniform today, serving our Nation today. Pour Your abundant blessings upon each of my fellow Veterans who gave of themselves in our Military Services often in unknown battles, forgotten by a nation that does not fathom the price of freedom. I pray this in Jesus’ victorious name.
